Intrinsic safety: what Zone 0 means for a patrol baton
The Tagtough baton is certified for Zone 0, the strictest hazardous-area classification. It can go wherever your guards have to.
The problem
On a mine, at a fuel depot or in a chemical plant, the air can contain gas or dust that will ignite from a small spark or a hot surface. Ordinary electronics are not allowed in those areas. A phone, a radio or a cheap patrol reader can be the ignition source.
What intrinsically safe means
An intrinsically safe device is designed so that it cannot release enough electrical or heat energy to ignite an explosive atmosphere, even when something inside it fails.
Hazardous areas are graded by how often the danger is present:
| Zone | Explosive atmosphere is present |
|---|---|
| Zone 0 | Continuously, or for long periods |
| Zone 1 | Likely in normal operation |
| Zone 2 | Unlikely, and only briefly |
Equipment certified for Zone 0 can be used in all three.
What it means for you
- Your guards can patrol the whole site with one baton, including the areas other equipment must stay out of.
- The baton can stay in use during an emergency on a mine.
- You have a certificate to show a safety officer or auditor.
The same certificate covers the smaller Mini Rock: ask for a certified unit when you order one.
The certificate, assessment report and area classification are in the Magtouch Electronics certifications library.
